Steven Quinn Dr. Carlin Cognitive Disabilities 12/6/15 Schizophrenia Case Study and Early Onset Signs Experts agree that Schizophrenia is a syndrome with signs and symptoms that are thought to co-occur in ways that distinguish it from other syndromes and from normal thoughts and behaviors. Schizophrenia can also be defined as a psychotic disorder with, impairments in reality, disturbances of perception and thought experienced as hallucinations, delusions, hearing voices, seeing things that are not there, and paranoia. Its onset usually starts in a person’s late teens to early twenties, and it affects about one percent of the global population. Its causes are unknown but experts are learning more and more about it every day. To contain†¦show more content†¦These symptoms have been categorized into physical, emotional, and cognitive issues. Some physical symptoms of this disorder are exhibiting a blank, emotionless facial expression. This inability to smile or express emotions throughout your face is a very important early sign of this disease, and was given the name affective flattening. Some other physical symptoms are overly acute senses, deep staring with no stimulus, impaired motor skills, involuntary movements, altered walking habits, unusual gestures, and overall slowed or sped up movements. Emotional symptoms are sometimes harder to identify, but have been observed as the inability to experience pleasure, irritability, depression, low motivation, hypersensitivity, suicidal thoughts, and sometimes severe anxiety. As if the previous symptoms weren’t harmful enough, there are many cognitive problems associated with schizophrenia. These can include roaming thoughts, incoherent thoughts and ideas, directionless motivation, trouble reading social cues, poor concentration and memory, and nonsensical logic. There ae many other pertinent symptoms associated with schizophrenia, but the list, unfortunately, goes on and on, and shows a direct impact on the working memory of individuals effected by this disorder.
